Teaching Phonics with the 🧠 Brain in Mind

Every morning in Kindergarten the kiddos look for Secrets in our Message of the Day and we mark it up and they tell me the Story. Morning message went from a minute or two to 5-10 minutes or longer everyday… and I ❤️ it! Notice the train shape around /ch/ and the thinking bubbles above /or/.

Special Education is doing Secret Stories! I’m a high school teacher who works with students with moderate / severe disabilities (many with vision and/or fine motor issues, which makes these magnet boards legit)! So exciting to see how students have been growing just using the flash cards and boards… and now we have the big posters and a large board for my vision impaired young lady! She’s so excited to be able to actually do the same activity as her peers!Image attachmentImage attachment

Where did you get the boards?

The centers are here: www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Science-of-Reading-Secret-Stories-Phonics-Centers-for-Phoneme... I made them magnetic since my high schoolers think Velcro is for babies, haha. For my visually impaired student, I had to blow up the photos so they would be large enough for her to see!

I don’t think it’s a secret story??? The children would know the “L” sound…but I’m a newbie! 😉

The -ple is a consonant le syllable type.

The L says /l/ as expected. The mama e is too far away for the vowel to listen to her. The secret is only in the eo part.

I took a class last summer about Orton Gillingham. I'm very interested. I really want to do the training. I teach 1st grade. I dream of tutoring kids all day but don't think I could make much. Has your training been valuable as a classroom teacher?

I teach it with “to” as an irregular heart word using the owl above the heart.
